Here on TechSource, we’ve reported about the increasing importance and adoption of telehealth, especially in the military. While civilian healthcare is limited by regulations in terms of telehealth adoption, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is not encumbered by state licensing rules and is free to use telehealth technology to deliver care to veterans throughout the system. In fact, the VA is leading the way in deploying telemedicine on a large scale. In fiscal 2013, more than 600,000 veterans accessed VA care using telemedicine programs for a total of more than 1.7 million episodes of care. According to a recent FCW article, the reach of the VA’s telehealth services is growing nearly 22 percent annually.

In support of the strides the VA is making with  telemedicine, Iron Bow Technologies has created a mobile telehealth delivery truck that will tour VA facilities across the U.S. this year to demonstrate the ways telehealth can extend healthcare access, enhance patient care and access and enable collaboration among healthcare providers and patients. TED—or Telehealth Education Delivered—is equipped with technologies that enable any facility to provide education and training on a range of telehealth and patient care solutions.

TED serves as both a facility from which mobile telehealth services can be delivered and/or received as well as a venue for providing education and training on an array of telehealth and patient care solutions. The technologies showcased in the vehicle can enable telehealth in many areas such as mental health, rural health, surgery, wound care, audiology, primary care, non-invasive cardio and dermatology—among many others.

TED began its journey on January 5th and will be making its way across the U.S. until September, making over 200 stops for live demonstrations and tours of the truck and the solutions inside. You can follow TED via its new website, as well as on Twitter and Instagram. The website features an interactive map that tracks TED’s location and shows real-time updates.
