Why People, Not Just Hackers, Pose the Greatest Threat to Security
Cybersecurity headlines are filled with advanced threats and zero-day exploits—but according to Cory Jackson, Managing Director of Cybersecurity at Iron Bow Technologies, some of the most dangerous risks are far more routine.
“It’s not always the user’s fault,” Cory says. “But it is always someone’s responsibility.”
In the latest Tech in Translation episode, we sat down with Cory to unpack the true meaning of cyber hygiene, how old habits die hard, and why solving security challenges often starts with understanding your people—not just your tech stack.
“Cyber hygiene is blocking and tackling,” Cory says. “It’s not flashy. But it’s where security is won or lost.”
When Security Slows People Down
VPNs, antivirus software, and other endpoint protections are often blamed for slowing productivity. Some users disable them altogether. Cory emphasizes that this kind of friction isn't just annoying—it’s dangerous.
The fix? Design with empathy.
“If users are bypassing controls, it's usually because their needs aren't being met,” Cory says. “We need to understand their workflows and design secure solutions that actually support them.”
Shadow IT Isn’t the Problem—It’s the Symptom
When employees turn to unsanctioned apps or tools, it’s rarely about defiance. It’s usually about getting the job done. Cory urges security and IT leaders to ask why before enforcing the no.
“Ask why they’re using that app. What’s it doing better than what you’ve provided?”
“Then fix the gap—securely.”
Build Security With Users, Not Against Them
Behavioral change doesn’t come from annual training sessions or top-down policies. According to Cory, it comes from consistent communication, integrated training, and a culture that values feedback.
“When employees understand the why, they’re more likely to follow the how,” Cory says.
The Not-So-Secret Weapon: Consistency
What’s next for cybersecurity hygiene? No new gadgets, no revolutionary trends—just the same basic best practices, done right and done often.
“We’re always chasing the next big thing,” Cory says. “But the biggest win is just doing the fundamentals well—every single time.”
